Throughout the posts you no doubt have come across the terms CB, FRS, GMRS, HAM, MURS. Each have advantages and disadvantages.
I'm not able to go in depth here,
CB- 40 channels 26.685-27.405MHz AM/SSB 4watts/12watts 5 mile range
FRS- 22 channels 462-467MHz FM/DATA .5watts (ch 8-14) 2watts all others FM Modulation
HAM- LICENSE REQUIRED, nonchannelised frequencies, 1Mhz-3000MHz upto 1.5kw transmitter power ranges vary from 3 miles to thousands of miles
MURS- 5 channels 151-154MHz upto 2watts transmitter power. Can use upgraded antennas to extend the range.
What service you use can have a direct impact on the ability to achieve contact, having communications intercepted or operating with minimal chance of both. Popular service means higher chance to establish contact and having the contact intercepted (monitored by others) an unpopulated radio service will have fewer people to contact but keep in mind, scanners are always a consideration.
