Question.....wondering if a Mylar bag would act as a good EMP protector for radios is a get home/ BOB. Also....any recommendations for not super expensive encrypted radios?
If it makes you feel better, put it in a mylar bag -unless you're really close to a very specialized weapon, the odds are low that its going to effect a ht in a backpack....
Why do you need encryption? Who do you thing is going to be listening are you going to be using repeaters? You might get better results with a descent quality unencrypted radio and upgraded antennas....
Whatever you choose be sure to test it with several different devices. Solar cycle won't peak for another 5-6 yrs. EMP effectiveness will be very limited until then but cycle 25 has started. Encrypted messages are not legal for amateur radio use so you will not find them on shelves. You could build an enigma cipher or buy one from the likes of commsprepper.
As mentioned, encrypting anything on a ham radio is verboten, and would flag you with bright flashing red lights as someone to “check out.” One might think the FCC et alia are understaffed and won’t worry about you, but there are uncountable Karens out there looking for anyone to stick pins into.
Good practice is limiting your power to just enough to make your contact, and especially for shorter distances use VHF or UHF frequencies. The fewer people that can hear you, the less chance of triggering a Karen.
Also, find someone to help you get a Ham (amateur radio) license. The knowledge of “how radios work” will open up other ways to protect yourself. . . without encryption.
