Tonight was a prime example of what can go wrong with something so simple. On a radio net this evening was a station with a 229 RST signal (read my post on R.S.T reports) and those on the net had difficulty understanding the station due to such a poor signal. However what made it worse was the made up phonetic alphabet the station was using. Using jalapeno instead of Joliet for J. Yokahama instead of Yankee etc. While there is unfortunately no stead fast rule that mandates the use of the common phonetic alphabet it is in the best Interest and best practice that the standard be used.
K8SD is NOT kilowatt eight sugar Doughnuts, it's kilo ate Sierra Delta. W9JZ is not Wine Nine Jalapeno Zeplin. I cannot stress how frustrating it was trying to decipher what the station was attempting to pass along while trying to listen through the static and remember that jalapeno doesn't start with an H!!
