Just a friendly reminder that winter field day is just around the corner. If you are interested in communications now is a good time to reach out to your local ham radio clubs and plan on attending/participating in this EmComm exercise. The majority of Ham Radio operators are preparedness minded! This event is centered around winter interoperability and the associated extreme weather related challenges when operating in stated conditions. The details can be found here: https://www.winterfieldday.com. The contest begins Saturday Jan 30th at 2pm EST and ends Sunday Jan 31st EST. Our Mag commo team will be operating 3OSTX. This is the perfect opportunity to test your station(s) even those who cannot transmit can setup their short wave radios and try listening in. A good way to find others in your area is monitoring 80 meters (3.80-4.0MHz) Lower Side Band (LSB) in the evening and morning hours. You can log call signs and reach out to locals in your area via email. If you plan to participate shoot me a PM and we can set up a QSO.

Still working on my general license but have an HF rig and building an antenna to hopefully listen in while i study! by summer i hope to actually have a portable system ready to test.
Don't forget you have phone privileges on 10 meters and CW on 40 meters. What kind of antenna are you building?
Yea that’s why I was thinking about starting with a 10 meter dipole and planning to eventually make it a fan dipole later. But 10 is so dead I’m wondering if I should just start with a 10/20 fan dipole or a 20 for listening. Planning to hang it at roof height between 2 buildings for now and eventually put it up in some trees nearby When I add 80/40 to it. I have a 1:1 choke balun already just need to find the time.
@Nope chucktesta If you have the room a multiband 40-80 meter OCF dipole or even an endfed will give you some options if 10 meters is closed. Summer is usually better for the high bands but you never know until you try. I know what you mean about time!
Yea I’m trying to avoid tuners and just use resonant antennas for now. Eventually want to do an 80/40/20/10 fan dipole and can mount it up about 50 ft in some trees but that’s longer term.
