There is a source in my area for 55 gallon blue HDPE water barrels, and they are cheap. They are the style that has the two 3-4" bungs on top with the threaded plugs.
I want to skip the mylar bags and 5 gallon buckets and put dry goods directly into these with oxygen absorbers and seal them up. Specifically dried yellow corn, white rice, various sorts of dried beans.
Would this work? Is it safe for long term storage? They'll be going into a non-temp controlled area, the garage, will the swing from hot to cold damage them or compromise their seals?
Thanks All!
How far a swing is the temperature? Hot temp degrade food, cooler temps slow down the process.
-30F to 100+F
The question may have been lacking details, I'm thinking more about a temp swing causing issues with the HDPE barrels. I know the food contained inside them will in its own way be effected by the temp changes.
That I don’t know. I just know temp variations will be a big factor in the answer. I hope someone knows more on this.
I know PJF has done with with wheat and added DE. I don't think he used any absorbers because without the mylar it wouldn't really make anything air tight. Wheat, rice and whole corn are pretty stable if you can keep them dry and bug free within normal temp range.
The de is a great
