So I've been cleaning out some things and I have a big box of Datrex emergency rations. These expired back in 2017 and Im debating to keep or toss them. Now these are vacuum sealed in a mylar bag so I feel they should be fine but this is what gets me about expiration dates. I feel like these expiration dates gives me a little fear in the back of my head that I will die if consumed 1 day after the expiration. Something sealed like this should be fine for several years after expiration? Ingredients are: wheat flour, vegetable shortening, cane sugar, water, cocount and salt. My concern is that the shortening is what will go bad more easily. What do you all think?

Most expiration dates are really do not sell past that date , I personally think that it is probably still safe up to 1 year past the date possibly longer.
I would think they are ok just try one. But if it smell rancid don't eat. They don't exactly tase great anyway but I would would taste em also, taste rancid spit out and pitch....I have eaten things 10 year past sell by date. Some were ok some I pitched right after opening.. Good luck.. I bet you can get at least 3 more years..
Throw one in your car or backpack. Next time you get hungry whip one out. Are they still tasty? Keep them. Especially if you have the space.
I accidentally ate a can of soup once that had expired over three years the date when I ate it. I thought my wife had bought it. Turns out it was left in the cabinet of the old house we bought. I'm not recommending it, but I'm still here.
You have to realize that the majority of expiration dates stamped or printed is to cover the company's butt that the item is coming from. Not how long you have until you throw it's going to make you sick. The more grace period given, the better chance that company will not get sued.
"food for thought"? Shalom all
Moore Do Like roykilocomms says..I have had the same experience, many time 10 year is ok..
LOOK SMELL TASTE I have preps 5 to 10 years past date... I throw a few things out here and there but not much..
When it comes to expiration dates we are always couscous. We also hate wasting food/money so rotation is very important to us.
i believe mainstay, datrex and sos food bars should be good for about 5 years...always check your food though smell, look, sample a bit....
