How much does using mylar bags actually extend the shelf life of staple grains (rice, wheat, beans, corn) in a 5 gallon bucket? I have 800lbs of rice and 800lbs of beans put up in different buckets with no mylar.
I understand that the plastic is permeable to air, but not moisture. I'm not concerned about weavils or other insects since I can just leave the buckets in the barn during our months of sub zero temps and kill any eggs.
So what gives with the mylar and why is it nessecary?
