I have raised potatoes in the Charleston SC and store them in a box in a dark closet. They only last about two months before drying up and or sprouting. How can I store them longer ?
I'm in zone 7 Cookeville, TN. I stored our potatoes in a bin with lid in wood shavings. They did pretty good. The shavings have started to mold the last few weeks but they were in there from November until mid April. I'm going to try damp sand and I'm also making trays like I had in our pantry in Ohio. We made ours using furring strips and 2x4s. Deep South Homestead used bread trays for theirs. I was also raised on using boxes of sand to bury taters, carrots, and other root veggies in and that was in a root cellar in WV.
