I have been looking into rain water collection and filtration. This seems like it can be a big investment, unless you know some tricks of the trade. Not looking for huge amounts of storage containers (i wish i could afford it), just 50gal barrels. I have the typical shingle roof/metal gutters and downspouts. No trees in yard to worry about debris. Wanting food grade safe barrels and a system to have for potential drinking water.
So far i have come to the conclusion of getting a system from here: https://www.bluebarrelsystems.com/ and trying a DIY Berkey filter system for it.
Any words of wisdom out there?
I have a fairly cheap system from a big box store. Rain diverter for the downspout and a plastic barrel was less than $100, I added a plastic garbage can as a second barrel. I use water directly from the system for watering plants. I plan to run the water through my Berkey if I need it for drinking.
Thanks Aaron. Ya, many of the big box store rain barrels i have seen do not advertise they are food grade/safe/bpa free plastic. So that was a concern to me, i have found very few that advertise they do outside of the typical blue water barrels. Planning on making my own Berkey system. Got the filters and supplies on order!
