Good morning and Blessings Bear nation.
So I'm not sure where to put this under ... but. ... here it is.
I would consider my family to be self reliant in progress. I am prior military and keep my skills and abilities as current as possible. We are all generally in shape, hike frequently, preps are in progress, we train, and keep close to Yah.
We live in a Rural area (20 mins out of a city of about 60k people), Access to my location has 2 ways in 2 was out, so pretty easy to secure via road access, but will have limited bodies for security patrols. We are surrounded by open fields in all directions, I can see them coming from a loooong way away and vice\versa. Neighbors are about 2-6 acres in all directions, most are elderly (most likely cant depend on them for security and would not be an issue to keep tabs on). My current location is not sustainable in the event of power loss - long term (IE no heat (its snows a lot in winter), no water (well is over 298ft down), minimal wild life). (I cant afford at this point to put in solar\wind, I have looked but with the current covid garbage there is no way I can swing anything at this time financially) we have limited livestock (that, can be rectified easily) Chickens and cows are obtainable and sustainable at current location. I have generators, but they will only last so long, eventually the fuel runs out.
My parents are about 15 miles from me (30 miles from city) They are older but capable. They started doing the things at the beginning of the year food, water, security, training ect. They have wood burning stove so with no electricity they will have heat, but sewage will go down, and water will only be available for a limited time (this time is unknown, the town is gravity fed but we are unsure how long that will operate or if it will be controlled and by whom). Security is a nightmare (neighbors are 10 ft away, and I'm fairly sure most are not prepped) and would depend on a lot of people to make happen effectively. I do believe the town will come together, but desperation will set in quickly. and desperate people will do desperate things. (the town is controlled by a single family, govt, and local talk is that that family likes control and has gone to some crazy extents to drive people out) (I dont think a gunfight or first contact at the drive way\front door is a good security plan, and bullet/fire proofing the home is not feasible, lol). We have planned and practiced their exfil if need be, but that is going to be a lot more successful if my part of the team is in play.
I have been given the opportunity to purchase a fairly large homestead (100 acres, wooded) in another state (liberal ran state, but the area it is in is conservative). My wife and I both have family in the area, and I know the community pretty well (We have people there). the area is a security\ self reliance dream, (lots of work to be done but I have the skills and ability, and kids lol, so not a consideration for me). There are multiple dwelling sights move in ready (almost), Wood burning stoves, has a stream on property, and a separate well, as well as septic. live stock (turkeys, goats, cows, chickens) will be added almost immediately. Same power problem as current location but I think more sustainable and secure as I wouldn't be dependent on power for heat, water, and cooking. And we would own it free and clear.
My parents dont want to up end their lives and move and I am concerned for them. However, I have a wife and 3 small children (1 of them an infant) to think about. My current employment would stay in place, so no loss of income.
I have spent a lot of time in prayer over this and I feel that he is leading us in this direction as does my wife, and ultimately we will follow his guidance. If we pull the trigger on this, we would be setting up a secure and sustainable homestead, but it would leave my parents, sister, and grandparents having to travel half way across the country (over 1,000 miles) in the event of collapse, and thus is my dilemma. I also have other community that would have to travel further, if they so chose to do so. I am loyal to my Tribe, and I think their percentage of success highly increases with my wife and I in play.
In your opinions, Would you stay and make improvements to the current situation? or move?
May The Lord bless you and keep you all!!
