Young family of four. Wanting to leave rural western NY for a more conservative, freedom oriented state. KY seems to offer a lot. Terrain, Good homesteading laws, from what I can tell good homeschooling laws gun laws.
Would really appreciate any input from current or former current or former Kentucky residents. NC also on the short list of possible states to move to. I haven’t been real thrilled about how Kentucky’s governor has handled the current pandemic. I haven’t been real thrilled about how Kentucky’s governor has handled the current pandemic. so That’s give me some pause. My wife and kids have a hard time with heat so I dont really want to go any further south. Any input is much appreciated.
A friend moved to KY and was building their own tiny house while living in a travel trailer. Was recycling grey water from the sink and tub, humanure, solar, garden, animals. CPS came in on them after they were reported for the recycling grey water to the garden area by someone "driving by". Apparently the inspectors can just get on your property. They moved and are now in the Ozarks. Ky has a high CPS ...involvement from what I have seen. Ohio does too. A 30 day case was opened on us 8 or 9 years ago when we were reported by new neighbors for having chickens around the kids and the grass in the pasture being too tall for children to safely play in it. They had an issue that we didnt have a tv and refused to believe kids could be entertained without it. Also had an issue we didn't have 2 batgroom sinks in our 1 bath, 2 bedroom home. Called the pantry hording, my 10, 3 gallon jars of kombucha for us and the livestock (goats, chickens, rabbits, lgd, cats, ducks) was "rotting food" and our lack of living room furniture (homesxhoolers so we had low tables and floor cushions for educational and play space) an issue. Ohio has a lot of rss (spent grain, woodchips, etc) and is homeschool friendly without needing to spend money. Tennessee is homeschool friendly but folks are not into outdoor activities and prefer fee based activity. My county threatened me with a lawyer in town just before covid. They created a "safety council" that allows them to work around the 0 restrictions (which is why I bought here) and says that my property has excessive vegetation (pasture), my pallet fence (surrounded the pigs to be a physical fence while training to electric) was unacceptable (I think it is cute so Im painting the slats white, planting sunflowers and yuppy-ing it up and using it along the road. They also would not allow me to convert my carport to a garage. (So I built a solid backed "shelf" with a door in it to cover the open end and now have an "enclosed" carport.) I will be moving once I have funds saved as we moved here a year ago and my safe spot isnt so safe anymore. :(
I have learned there will be issues no matter where you go when you think and live differently.
Thanks so much for your time and insights!
you might consider the american redoubt that would be eastern wa and oregon, idaho, montana and wyoming its a bit further west than kentucky....
Thanks Wally
