I have a VERY unique problem. I was Elected as the Disaster Response Coordinator for our local Adventist Church. took a different approach to the post than my predecessors. Instead of responding to the needs of our members AFTER the Disaster, I've been trying to teach them how to prepare for themselves BEFORE the Disaster happens. I have had little to no success. I can think of THREE reasons for this:
1. The Normalcy Bias. People don't want to accept that things are NOT as they once were. With ALL that has happened in 2020, I believe things will NEVER go back to "normal".
2. There are Government Safety Nets to deal with these things. Those funds are rapidly drying up. There are simply too many people in need at this point for even the best intentioned and/or well funded agencies and Organizations to handle the 30 Million Americans now out of work, and many on the street.
3. The Adventists have a saying and TOO MANY believe this: "The Angels will feed us". I have NEVER been able to find that ANYWHERE in the Bible! I've tried to explain to them until I was Blue in the face that WE ARE NOT ELIJAH!!!
To the best of my Knowledge mine is the ONLY Family in the entire Church that can eat for more than a week if everything goes South! And, they are NOT coming to MY House! I have warned them. I have told them what they need to do and how to do it! I have done my level best to perform my duties in good faith and THEN SOME! I estimate I can feed my wife and myself for a year-I CANNOT Help 90+ people who have had three years of my teaching and counsel but won't GET OFF THEIR A$$E$! I have discharged my responsibility to them as lovingly and competently as I know how! Their "passive resistance" has brought me to tears many times, but as the old saying goes; You can lead a Horse to water.....There is nothing more I can do for them. If they go hungry it will be on them alone!
