After Bear did his YT video on this, I asked him questions and started doing my own research. Here's the quick, down and dirty formula for using wood ash for the process. I cup dried corn to 1 cup clean wood ash. No clinkers, sift those out. Cover corn with water, add wood ash and boil, then simmer for hours. Add water as necessary. When the hulls of the corn start to release, you be done. Drain, rinse and keep on until the water runs clear and the hulls are all gone. From here you can use it immediately, or dry it, grind it and store it.
