I’ve been trying to identify ways of outsmarting socialism or even thriving under a socialist-leaning government if it comes to that. If Biden and the squad defeat Trump, I’m anticipating a lot less money at my disposal that I’ve become accustomed to. No need to specify the reasons.
My belt is pretty tight already so tightening it a couple more notches will be pretty uncomfortable. Bartering sounds good in theory, and maybe in practice, just not my cup of tea, yet. Black markets?, possibly. Amping up my food production?, likely. Under the counter transactions with clerks?, something I will need to begin developing, but not likely to work at big box stores. Trading ration coupons with motivated citizens, etc. Would appreciate any advice or suggestions for living under socialism, especially from anyone who’s actually had to do it. Thanks.
Good thoughts, i dont have an answer for you but ill be following
Yeah, that’s where my minds been going too. A big reason I’m trying to find like minded people that aren’t too far away. And like y’all, I don’t have any answers either!
it will be hell...do what you have to do to survive...me i have other plans if the commies win...
My opinion is that you are thinking the thoughts that are common to many of us- I assume that, but I stand by it. I too foresee myself being "socially unacceptable" to my current and most potential employers, though I am a standout performer with a long tenure. I just don't fit any of the favorable demographics. So...I've ben operating on a "better 10 years early than 10 minutes late" mindset. I assume I too will barter and connect with the "rebel forces". Should the Lord tarry and continue to allow me to breathe His air of course.
I worked in the former Eastern German state of Saxony for a number of years after college (post re-unification) and had some interesting conversations with people of all ages, all of whom had lived under the DDR or East German Democratic Republic. Despite the name, as you history buffs know, it was a Communist puppet state of the USSR. Everyone who lived under this Communist rule was forced to become very creative in terms of making extra money. One guy I knew who was a former East German border guard smuggled cigarettes and American whiskey into his town. He had a good little business, but of course had some run ins with the Stasi- not recommended unless you know what you're doing. Another guy collected bike parts from dumpsters and trash cans and welded them into brand new bikes and sold them all across the country. Another guy who was a military mechanic had a pretty good hustle in which he was able to obtain car parts from BMW's from West Germany- he secretly installed them into client's Trabbi's (the crappy single kind of car East Germans were allowed to own), effectively pimping them out. Finally, a woman I knew had a clandestine radio that could pick up signals from West Germany, Denmark and England. She would memorize the songs, write them down and perform them in underground speakeasys and cabarets of the day, made a pretty good living too.
