Hey Y`all,
I'm rag-tagging a seed starter setup together and I'm looking for cheap seed flats without holes. I can't find them without spending over $25. They are just a simple tray or tupperware that holds the cells in place that can be watered. I'm under a single shop light and I'm looking to do about 50 plants for a 1/4 acre back yard.
What do your indoor seed starting setups look like, especially if you are reusing pots from Home Depot or trying to find a way to water your plants from the bottom with a larger flat?
So far I'm using a storage tote lid and everything is sitting on top of that. It bends a lot and water seems to pool. I might need something smaller. :)
We are using the container from my son’s LEGO Advent calendar, no holes and works great :)
Years and years ago we used to start seeds in all kinds of buckets, plates, containers etc. . If i had to start seeds today that way id use the same set up we are using for propagation right now . The failure rate for transplanting etc. Is much higher, but you just plant more seeds to start with. Having the right amount of moisture is obviously a constant guessing game if your containers dont have a way to release water😁. Much more important is the right amount of light, so your seedlings wont get leggy 👍🌱🌿... Today we use floating hydroponic trays and concrete mixing tubs, works like a charm.
Also plastic cups work as well... those have holes in the bottom to release excess water.. trays are lined with trash bags to hold the water.
Reusing pots, obviously you would have seeds in it, not cuttings
Floating tray set up (i know you didnt ask for that, just thought i may include, for reference)
I use paper dixie cups. They break down over time which is good. I place on large cookie sheets that have edges. My mom used egg cartons back when they were cardboard. If you can find those anywhere they are good to use too. I don't know about using the foam cartons.
