If you dont have your seeds yet, get them, baker creek is shut down due to covid, they will be reopening but not for a while and other seed sites i looked at had at least a 2 week back log. Ive seen lots of seeds in tractor supply and hardware stores still, grab them while you can. The seed companies all had statements out saying they cannot keep up with the higher than usual volume of orders and are running under
staffed.
Another great resource for seeds is a brother here in Bear Nation. Joey @burninghearthhomestead
https://burninghearthhomestead.org/our-plants/
@reneestump we can go straight through them instead of the bear store?
@JS Badger absolutely! Joey is awesome. TJ is just trying to help facilitate and get his name out via Bear Nation.
@reneestump that's a blessing. 😊
Fedco is still shipping seeds! I get most of my seed from them since they are a Maine company. The also still have potato seed, wheat seed and rice seed. I just ordered some rice seed that grows well here in Maine. Prices are reasonable too.
Ill have to check that out, honestly i buy my seeds at a local greenhouse but i was looking for mangel beets and not alot of places carry them. Ill be looking into the rice and wheat though. One of my friends is doing hull less wheat from johnnys this year, ill be very interested to see how she
I ordered rice this winter to start growing here. Now I'm expanding the garden so much I don't have time to read up on rice. How are you planting and growing yours? I was going to use kiddy pools for mine.
I would definitely check them out before the start to sell out!
This site still have mangel beet seeds!

I did see them, they also got hit by an earthquake though, i ended up ordering from victory seeds last night, they have a 2 week back log but as its snowing right now im not too worried about that 😰
@Maine homestead mom Oh no! I have heard good things about Victory Seeds. Glad you got some!
Stupid snow, we have about an inch already, calling for up to 10" here. Happy Spring (in Maine...) lol.
@HungerMoonFarm
Yes, weve been getting those emails as well. Good for the small seed companies i.e. MIgardener, but a bit of a predicament if one needs seeds RIGHT now. Also they still ship, they are delayed. Check out local sources. Also a bit of a side thought, but our fruit/nut tree shipping has yet to show up (partly our fault, since Burgess has horrendous reviews, yet we just had to order from them FACEPALM) and stores are continuously selling out of chicks and it seems our online chick order is greatly delayed. Weve just put about 80 eggs in our incubators, we haven't hatched in over two years, so hopefully we will get a decent hatch rate. One could always go that route and buy a small incubator to hatch their own (we all know chickens go broody at their own time, not when we NEED them to 😂😂) they are available at local feed stores as well as orschlands, fleet and farm, tractor supply, atwoods etc. . Anyways, I'll stop my rambling and hope y'all are setting foot into a very bountiful gardening year!
at minds think alike, we got 2 roosters and reposessed our incubater sunday 😂
Now we have no damn power though, and my coffee was half done 😰 heating the teapot to dump over my coffee grounds, lol, yay gas stove... Anyone run an incubater on a generator yet?
Eta i have a small, dewalt power block, maybe that will do it...
Darn it!!! Never done it, but you could run it on a generator if you are prepared to constantly fill it back up 🤔. That gets expensive whew. Hopefully your power will come back on soon! How long does your power usually go out for? Reason I ask is maybe you can wrap your incubator in blankets and hot bottles for time being? Or get the wood stove going and position the incubator near by? Such a predicament!
@FoodForThoughts i would only put it on the generator if i was running it anyways to keep the freezer cold, hoping it comes back before i really need to though, we were going to try filling it up this weekend...
TJ recently did a video and talked about this. I know some can run in generators. But also like @FoodForThoughts said. Wood stove. If I remember from the video you can also boil water and put in jars covered in a sock to keep them warm.
I thankfully dont have any eggs in it yet so its not a huge predicament yet, hoping the power doesnt stay out for long, web site still says assessing...
One fantastic source of “ seeds” is the grocery store. Find older potatoes and cut the eyes out plop in the dirt. Sweet taters too. Use an onion, leave 1/2 inch of bottom, place in water and in a few days it will root and new leave come up. Place in dirt. Celery too.
Not a bad idea but I will add that you want to plant only organic potatoes because conventional are sprayed with an anti-sprout agent to prevent them from fully sprouting. Onions also will not bulb again but can grow more green onion like parts.
Talking about seeds, I believe we have THE best neighbors ever... neighbour showed up with a bag full of Y2k seed cans. I about fell of my chair!!!! The most valuable present we have gotten in a long time.
Lmao, i cant believe theyve been sitting on those for 20 years 😂 and i thought i had a seed hoarding problem, let me know what you get for germination out of those
@Maine homestead mom gotta love it. Well we really would love to germinate some, but that would mean opening up the cans, and we really would like to keep them the way they are 😊. Around here we are not hurting for seeds, but maybe someday we will. Always good to have a back up to a backup 🤔😊.
Argh! 😰😡😵
What in the world is that white stuff out there?!?!?! On a side note we are down here in Ar and about to get some cold nights as well 32° if that makes you feel better 😉. Hopefully the gardens and orchards will be ok.
Territorial seed company is temporarily suspending seed sales due to high demands. Just in case that's a need to know ...
I did get my beet seeds from victory seeds faster than
How did everybody do saving seed this year?
I saved all my main crops. Peanuts, black eyed peas, lettuce, sweet taters, taters, beans, corn, tomatoes, several varieties of winter and summer squash, maypops, etc. Going to double the gardens size next year.
We did extremely well, but after what weve seen this past winter/spring i also made it one of my highest priorities to save as many seeds as possible, while growing a large and vast amount of food. We have reached this goal and can say weve added to our humangous seed stash and could easily provide new seeds for many should the need arise. Food is the power that lets one be free and gives one the ability to act and react as needed! We have saved several tomatoe varieties (pineapple, wisconsin55, mortgage lifter, san marzano, black cherry, amish paste, large meaty mix, mid size mix,) cal. bell peppers, cajun hot peppers, Tabasco peppers, purple bell, asparagus, zucchini, ground cherry, basil, roman chamomile, armenian cucumber, pickling cucumber , mammoth dill, sugar pumpkin, silver line melon, sweet baby melon, sascetchuan melon, tobacco, small striped squash, zucchini, lavender, bantam sweet corn, mustard, mullein, marshmallow, mix lettuce radish broccoli, peas, loofah, sorghum, radishes, sweet potatoes, spaghetti squash, butternut sqash, garlic (its already back in the ground). This does not include a lot of winter veggies, we will hopefully get to harvest seeds from as well come spring... praying for a even bigger harvest of seeds and veggies from our winter garden things seem to get a bit hanky out there...
Reviving this thread to warn folks to get your seeds in order if you havent already, lots of sites are already putting retrictions on when home gardeners can order, im seeing varieties out of stock and the msm is running gardening articles, get squared away folks. I will throw out a good word for victory seeds, they dont seem to have raised their prices at all this year, others... Wow
Oooh the msm is peddling gardening/seeds? Dear, thank you for posting. Wish your comment would reach more people.
I found this website that supplies heirloom seeds. is this a good one? It seems they have a lot in stock but I am not sure if its legit. Help?
What website? Maybe a link didnt post?
