Hey guys. I've ended up with a pretty good amount of seeds from some of our plants this year. I was wondering if any other seed savers had an especially successful harvest. If so and you'd like to trade let me know and we can work something out. Heres a list of what did exceptionally well for us this year. Marshmallow
Matt's Berry Tomato
Pink Vernissage Tomato
French Marigolds
Oregano
Lemon balm
Feverfew
Yarrow
Holy Basil
Chives
Calendula
There's a lot more that we grow, but being new plants we prevented much of it from seeding. I'm sure we'll have some different things as the season winds down completely. It will probably be mostly pollinator flowers. I'll update as we collect them.
What an awesome idea! Right now the only thing I would have to offer is Jewelweed, in limited quantity as I am competing with finches for the seeds and Himalayan Balsam, which is the same family, but with more food applications than the smaller Jewelweed.
They will write songs about you, and how you bravely faced down the birds during The War of the Finch's Swarm.
See what you end up with and let me know. I'd rather see you plant all of yours there if things are scarce. In the meantime if there's anything you want to start that I listed let me know and I'll get it to you. Fall is a good time to start perennial herb seeds.
@burninghearthhomestead that's funny. The one plant I have in great abundance is the Himalayan Balsam. Same family as Jewelweed and I believe most of the same medicinal uses as the Jewelweed. It can be invasive so never plant it anywhere near gardens, woe to you if you do. It is a rather beautiful plant and gets very tall, 6-8' here and the Bees and Humming Birds love it. So do the deer in the Spring. This plant would be a great thing for those that keep bees.

@Haunted55 This is proving to be exceeding difficult to do on my phone. I keep losing my posts for some reason. Email me burninghearthhomestead@outlook.com or the same name on Instagram and I'll get some stuff sent your way.
I also save seeds from year to year and usually have small quantities that I could trade (or even donate to the right people). I am in Western NC--just almost in a temperate rainforest--so many of my seed stocks might not work in other locations. A short list of what I have in small quantities: Old Timey Mountain White Half Runners (a family heirloom seed stock for 50 years, a very prolific, tender, traditional climbing green bean), White Bunch Beans (an early bush bean, also a 3 generation heirloom), okra (family heirloom--no idea of specific type, been planting and saving seed for 3 generations), and a very prolific, large type of cooking pumpkin (unknown variant, again, been planting and saving seeds for 3 generations--it makes a 20+ lb pumpkin that is light orange/salmon in color and is excellent for making pumpkin butter and pies...). I usually have tomato seeds for heirloom Hillbilly's Stripeys small yellow cherries, small red cherries, small yellow pears and others but I harvested no tomatoes this year and thus no extra seeds due to an over-abundance of rain that caused all my tomato plants to die--maybe next year! Anyone need anything my email is backcountrymedic2 at gmail
Just sent you an email. You may have to check your spam.
@Dogbone 99 I did not get an email from you. Maybe try again?
What variety of seeds were you able to gather this year? I would like to try your okra. I’m in a rainforest type climate and it has been cooler at night then normal, and too wet in the spring. I have gathered many open pollinated seeds. Brads atomic grape, pink boar, Cherokee tomatoes, Napa cabbage, and 4th season broccoli. I also have red onion, walla walla, and yellow onion seeds. i also harvested last years carrots seeds. I believe are Danvers but could be another or variety I’m not sure which wintered over. Email is. Dcpcmr@yahoo.com if anyone is interested.
MIgardener has seeds for 0.99$ a pack. Hundreds of varieties, all heirloom, superb germination rate and true customer service. We've been buying from them for many years now.
@FoodForThoughts agreed. We have as well, many varieties and excellent germination.
Can we come back to this again at the end of this growing season? It would be nice to have a big seed swap in the community! I will have lots of Northern acclimated seed for those in that climate.
Sounds good to me. If you'd like to email me we can give it a skeleton now so when the time comes we know whats going on. joey@burninghearthhomestead.org
This sounds like an excellent idea to me as well! Hopefully, I'll have some to swap as well!
Would love to get in on this, I will have a lot of pole bean seeds that did awesome for me this year, my email is Frito660@gmail.com
Let this year be a good seed year for all of us, since everyone seems to be sold out already. In any event we have a bunch of seeds already saved, from common tomatoe to tobacco and a few wild plants i.e , mullein etc. I was thinking today, should we maybe write down wish lists, in case someone else is growing these but wasnt planning on saving seeds for themselves? 🤔.
I got together last winter with a couple people to collect seeds this year. So we got many Varieties of tomatoes and a few other item. We will have lots of tomato seeds and varieties of kale. How have you guys been keeping things separated and labeled ?
Little plastic bags, baby food jars, sandwich bags and reused seeds company envelopes...
We did pretty well this year but our peppers did the best. The orange thai did exceptionally well. If anyone is looking for something specific let me know. If we have the variety I can send seeds your way.
