I am not looking to make a zillion bucks, and recognize I probably won't make anything. I'd like to be able to file for taxes though. I like chickens, and am wanting to get into breeding chickens for prepping, sell em reasonable locally Mid-Atlantic.
I have my personal laying flock of Golden Comets, obviously won't be breeding them. I have a local breeder near me, real nice stock, she sells New Hampshires. I like a lot about the New Hampshire (that makes up half of the Golden Comet), good little foragers, egg laying machines, friendly to people, smart, active, could eat if one wanted, does well in cold or warm weather, can go broody which has pros for SHTF, but am worried other folks won't like them so much as they do NOT do well in mixed breed flocks. Our Golden Comets are down right violent to other chickens, and the NH are known for giving this trait. We have a few Orpingtons, the rooster was so nasty we shot him, several of his hens got ate by a fox while he scooted away. The Orpingtons dual purpose, good moms and can go broody so that'll be good if no electricity, friendly, okay foragers. Am I missing cons? Maybe too common? Folks are not interested in buying them? We got HUGE Dark Brahmas. We were supposed to be sent a rooster, but weren't, darn! These girls are 5 months old and 10lbs, not mature yet either! They don't forage too crazy well, but they can hide apparently, none got ate during the fox attack that took 8 other birds. Dual purpose, but slow growing. Might become broody though not guaranteed, but if they do they are good moms. They surprisingly do alright in heat, they hide in the heat. Good in the cold. Not mean to other breeds, they've been with Welsummers, Buffs, Sussex, and Comets, but they could get bullied. I actually think they eat less than our smaller birds. They don't mind being let out or staying in a small space. Quiet, so that'd be good for keeping your laying flock on the down low. I have access to Ameracauna pullets and roosters, that'd be fun for blue eggs, and they'd sell higher (they are not EE), but I am not quite sure they'd be good for preppers. I have some Speckled Sussex, the rooster was so sweet, he was one of the chickens killed in the fox attack. Sussex are kind of stupid. But, goooood meat. Their stupidity worries me, though. They aren't vicious, and I think are selling pretty good now.
Any breeds anyone recommends? I think a dual purpose would be best for shtf, any thoughts?
