There will be two challenges. (1) Getting insulin and (2) Maintaining the temperature of the insulin. My parents are both insulin dependent type 2 diabetics. I am a type 2 diabetic but have been able to maintain my blood sugar via diet , exercise and oral medication so far. Being that diabetes is a progressive disease, more than likely I will be on insulin at some point in my life. In a true grid down event, it probably would be a death sentence. If that were to occur, my heart is right with the father and my son will assume my responsibilities of taking care of the rest of the family. It is what it is. In the book "One Second After" by William Forstchen, the main character's daughter is a type 1 diabetic. If you have not read that book it is highly recommended .
My thoughts exactly and even if I was able to gather as much insulin as possible and keep it at a suitable temperature that will only last so long. Little over a year and all insulin everywhere is no good
I haven't a clue how to make insulin, but one of my many projects is to create a solid state medical grade freezer that can keep perishable medicines at -80 celcius. This should be adequate to store insulin and antibiotics for long term. It is one of my many projects...
In fact, we need a special place to put up this kind of stuff. That way someone can go there to find answers. Someone wants to do that...lol. Nope, not me. My time is going to be spent finding those links.
A root cellar can keep things at 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Insulin needs to be kept between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit so that is an option. that 45 degrees for the root cellar is probably best case scenario and not a consistent temp though. Another challenge would be the expiration date of the insulin which Im sure can be extended somewhat under ideal conditions but would be hard to do under more austere condition . Last thought on this is how do you stockpile a controlled item like insulin.
Thank you for the link to the article. It makes mention of a paper which indicates the Insulin is directly affected by EMP. I found this to be surprising...but doing some more "homework" on it I see insulin is a fragile chain of amino acids connected together in a complex way that forms a specific shape. The shape of the molecule is thus crucial for it to function: it is hormone and it is a molecular "key" that turns a lock in a receptor on a cell...
Now having read about that I now have questions that I cannot answer. Fortunately a friend of mine is a retired surgeon, so I am going to pick his brain and see what is up. I'm sure he atleast can point me in the right direction!
I feel the question of the storage of insulin is crucial and deserves a somewhat exhaustive study. So I will get back to everyone here when I learn more.
Spoke with a pharmacist friend yesterday about long term storage and dehydration. We also spoke about the inhaled insulin. From what I was told, that was pulled from the market 2 weeks after it's launch as people were out of control with it. Either too much or not enough. Still, if it could be done then for the inhalers...it can be powdered. I don't know, I can reason, but it would have to be someone more learned than me.
I know, I know....I keep putting up links. Sorry, but why take my word when you can view the original? Saw this last night and was completely amazed. A lot of common sense in here. Shabbat Shalom.
Being diagnosed a Type 1 recently, I have been hording what I can, very expensive! Obviously the spring, summer and fall will be challenging. Ive tried the clay pots and sand method and that seems to work atleast for awhile. Any other ideas would be appreciated. TMAC
I have a type 1 friend who has made a kerosene fired fridge from a camper propane powered refrigerator. He was looking for a plan C as he has his own solar array for daily power. Also I have heard of a new insulin that is not temperature dependent. Someone I work with uses it and I will ask them. It looks similar to the epi-pen.
Yes, I know, a lot of advertising. Look beyond that and glean the good information out of it. There really are a lot of doctors still telling their patients to use this crap! It's called the Health Industry for a reason, think about that one for a moment. Then think about this, doctors 'practice' medicine. Now that word says volumes and unfortunately it's true. I am not saying do not go to a doctor, I am saying go with an informed mind and plan of your own. Type 2 can be reversed, sometimes with something as simple as a 72 hour fast. I do not have it, but I have had people in my immediate family who did. My brother-in-law, same age as I am, is dead because he wouldn't listen to me. Followed the doctor instead. My Mom and Dad were both diabetes free long before they finally passed. The information is out there, I humbly suggest you find it now.
My mom and I are both diabetics. A plant based diet that is low in carbs along with consistent exercise has helped but we still need insulin. After a great deal of research resupplying insulin will be a problem.
Look up a company called FRIO, in the UK. They produce a range of gel pouches for keeping insulin cold. They need no electricity, and are reusable. Just soak in water to activate and your insulin is safe.
My partner has used them for years. Been to Tunisia, Turkey, Spain for 10-14 days, without access to refrigeration, and had no issues. Designed by a Diabetic who couldn't find a way to keep his insulin safe while travelling.

If you can, look into Inergy Solar Generator. Spec says 36 hrs for a small refrigerator.
the whole series is good
Are you a type 1 or 2?
Type 1
@billydavis8 That's going to be rough brother.

That would be awesome. Of course we would also be looking at what power structure is controlling the medicine, gangs? rogue government?
China?
yep wont be an easy ride... but if I’m breathing I’m moving forward
It can be made. If you are in your place, raise sheep. I will look up the research I did for someone else and post the links here.

Can stockpile but would cost a fortune what I buy usally has roughly a year until it expires I can buy as much as I want but would only last a year
Insulin? So if there was a way to put it into deep freeze, it would keep longer than a year?
@TyMoore can’t freeze it that kills it
@billydavis8 I just did some homework reading on insulin. Yeah, freezing deactivates it. bummer
Some states you can buy over the counter but it’s pricy
I was not aware of that

The only reason I saved this one is the mention of an EMP on insulin

You can buy insulin at Walmart pharmacy without a prescription at a good price

Will you please post as soon as you find out? Lots of brothers and sisters out here who need all the help they can get!
Thank you! I too would be interested in non-temperature dependent insulin.
@Haunted55 Sadly he is using Ozempic and not insulin. "He" was confused as I guess he used to use insulin. I also don't believe he is type one either.

i have a couple of these and they work fine, just need water to start the cooling process...
FRIO Wallets is the name....
