"We need a medevac bad, three soldiers are hurt bad by a mine. My legs are blown off. Tell them to hurry!" 1st LT Charles Hemingway, June 1967.
The above quote is possibly the last thing my Uncle Charles said before he died later on 13 June 1967. From my researching his death that day I learned he probably bled out as they were trying to get him to the nearest U.S. Military hospital. He had multiple fragmentation wounds and was at least a double amputee from the explosion of a North Vietnamese or Vietcong land mine that also wounded or killed two other soldiers.
What I want to know is when is the nearest STOP THE BLEED class to Topeka, Kansas? As a private security officer I may find myself faced sometime with an active shooter or armed robbery gone bad. Someone may have only seconds to live while AMR and Fire Rescue are minutes away from arriving. Most likely I won't face the type of injuries my Uncle Charles received, but in this growing troubling time you never know if someone may elect to blow up a car bomb in a busy public place like a Walmart or Menards parking lot. Though a leg wound that even nicked the femoral artery would be just as bad as what happened to my uncle.
