This might get into a touchy subject, but are there any meds that you are tucking away for long-term storage for if it needs to hit your BOB? I'm half-tempted to ask my primary care physician if he'll subscribe a dozen meds for my backpack.
I need an Epipen
I need some steroids
I need some opioids
I need somme antibiotics
I get a blank stare. :)
What's a good med loadout look like?
I'm storing tylenoland Motrin as fever reducers, i have a family history of addiction so I tend to shy away from the stronger stuff. You can pick up fish antibiotics to be used for humans. Tractor supply has a pretty impressive range of meds for animals as well if you have any animals as part of your plan. There are also alot of naturalpainrelief options that you don't need a prescription for, everyone should have a basic understanding of herbals imo. I make a comfrey salve for my friends with arthritis that works awesome.
diabetis
heart
blood pressure
cholestorol
tylenol
baby asprin
pepto
nyquil
theraflu
antihistamine/sinus stuff
heartburn
If kratom is legal in your area it is a GREAT opiate substitute!! I keep some in our bag!
TRADITIONAL MEDS:
-aspirin can be used for heart attack S/S: chest pain sometimes radiating to right shoulder different signs for women: two 81 mg or one 325 mg if all you have is regular strength (thank ya @CareBearđ»)
-benadryl (antihistamine good for immune responses and allergies)
-tylenol
-ibuprophen
-antacid tablets
-afrin (nasal decongestant)
-sudafed
-oragel for tooth pain/discomfort (PLEASE DONT FORGET ABOUT THE HEALTH
OF YOUR TEETH. YOU HAVE TOOTH/MOUTH PAIN OR AN INFECTION YOU WILL NOT WANT TO EAT AND CAN LEAD TO DEATH IN SHTF!
you can buy those metal dental cleaning picks and pliars (just in case) on amazon. also tooth remineralization powder or regular calcium
powder may help with cavities.
-Old Indian Wild Cherry Bark syrup (respiratory conditions)
-would consider buying narcan at the store just to have..
-fish antibiotics (get online or at some animal supply stores)
cephalexin (fish flex)
floroquinolones
ammoxacillin (fish mox)
ALTERNATIVES TO TRADITIONAL MEDS:
-You know those 2 oz coffee shots you can get at a gas station? Keep some in your bag if anyone you know is asthmatic. Can work temporarily as an epi-pen 'replacement' as caffeine stimulates sympathetic nervous system and can help with bronchodilation to open up lungs. They most likely won't allow you to stock
up on epi-pens, and they are only 'good' for about 2 yrs tops.
++++HERBALS are good to look into. Even if you are not the biggest fan,
options are always a good thing.
-dandelion is a natural diuretic (makes you pee more water than normal, decreasing fluid volume in bloodstream)
may be of benefit for heart failure management
[Coffee and alcohol are also diuretics, but you lose water and salt with coffee
and I wouldnt recommend becoming mentally impaired for any length
of time by choice with what is coming down the pipeline. Save the alcohol
for disinfecting and bartering items ect.
-cayenne pepper for heart attacks and hemostatic agent for internal bleeding. never tried either but have read if cayenne tincture taken (i believe 1 tbsp) and followed by a cup of hot water it can stop an attack..
-You can make something similar to aspirin from willow tree bark tea FYI.
-Ginkgo biloba leaf
-tumeric root! many uses, anti-inflammatory properties
****easy TOPICAL pain relief:
arnica (herbal) gel
menthol (herbal) based (AKA: tiger balm/icy hot/bengay)
Blue emu (from animal) (never tried it)
capsaicin patches- easy fast and not messy
++++ESSENTIAL OILS ARE NOT JUST FOR YOUR MOTHER IN LAW--can be used for many medical issues but must be careful:
-Wintergreen essential oil is good for muscular pain relief or menstrual
cramps, but use only a few drops once a day. Use a carrier oil along with it like coconut oil or anything you have. Too much wintergreen can damage liver.
I believe it is also good for sciatica nerve pain.
-certain blends of oils can stop migraines if used early and can boost
mood/morale and combat depression.. that will be important...
++++VITAMINS/dietary supplements
-Vitamin C is essential in my experience for prevention and for active disease. They make powder (good for children who cant swallow horse pills).
Technically, it would be difficult to OD on this as you pee out excess vit C (it is water soluble) but I would not overdo it, if only to ration it.
[Rose hips are very high in vitamin C]
[If in wilderness, pine needle tea is a good source of vitamin C]
-honey! for sore throat and topical infections (it is anti bacterial/fungal) you can do a lot with it, its a great energy source and does'nt go bad. you cannot lose.
OPIOID substitute possibilities:
-Kratom (like Flora mentioned) red vein leaves are likely most helpful with
that. Can be ordered online. Maybe try a local shop first if available.
-Cannabis (if you roll that way).. to be VERY clear I oppose becoming mentally impaired for any length of time by choice especially during SHTF. Yea, you will be stressed out. Not an excuse to hand the wheel over to someone else. With that being said, there is peer reviewed research out there. If chronic pain is an issue, this may be an option you want to consider. Easy to grow so im told. Easy to get seeds online so im told from a REPUTABLE establishment. I personally would not trust what they are handing out at gov-funded dispensaries now a days. Probably some GMO'd watered down garbage.. anywho... There is support for its use with seizures even in children, PTSD, many types of inflammatory diseases, IBS, CANCER, autoimmune diseases that are labeled 'incurable', the list could go on for pages. ***It does not need to be smoked- cannabis oil can be made and ingested; if interested look up Rick Simpson.***
-There is also CBD oil out there, which seems like a decent option although I could not tell you if it is worth it for severe or chronic pain. (Also sold everywhere)
(not so sure about the steroid thing, if you are willing to mention what condition you use them for I might be able to find something.)
please look into what you are interested in on your own, I am just going off of my memory at the moment and recall may be fuzzy, plus I am not an expert or doctor. i also may have spelled things wrong-haha
if anyone has specific questions if they or a loved one is living with certain diseases, I will try my best to help.
**LOOK UP ThePatriotNurse on youtube she does great videos on the med topic
GOD BLESS!!!!!đ€
Iâm curious where you found the dosage for 81mg ASA? (âOne every 5 minutes up to 3 times onlyâ). As a first aid instructor, this is the directives for Nitroglycerine for angina/HA, but ASA directives is to chew two 81mg ASA if you have them (ideal) or one 325mg if thatâs all you have.
Hello! So I am in nursing school, our pharmacology professor told us what people can do if they have prolonged chest pain and are at home waiting for an ambulance or something to that effect. I believe she said 3 baby aspirin but I might be off--I was just rattling things off the top of my head
@ashalayo Iâm fairly confident you have Asprin (ASA) dosage instructions mixed up with nitroglycerin dosage instructions. The purpose of the ASA is that it creates a slippery âcoatingâ on the platelets to prevent clotting so it reduces the effect of the heart attack by preventing the clot from increasing because the platelets canât clot together anymore. It is not a situation of âthe more the betterâ which is why the dose is 2 x 81mg or 1 x 325 mg if all you have is regular strength. Nitroglycerine on the other hand (spray or under-the-tongue tablet) is a vasodilator so if the patient has been prescribed it you can give 1 dose every 5 minutes to a maximum of 3 doses. Patient should be sitting, as it causes a rapid expansion of all the bodyâs blood vessels which can cause a rapid drop in blood pressure, which may cause dizziness/fainting.
wow...very informative thanks...are you sure you can buy narcan OTC? isn't that the drug that brings people back to life after an OD?
Iâm not sure about any other areas, but here in Alberta anyone can get a Narcan kit free of charge.
Yea, it only works for opioid OD- so unless you have some stashed not too sure why you would even need it... pretty sure they passed somethin for most states to be able to sell it- havent followed up with it and idk how long it lasts so. . .
Looked this up. Seems to support the above aspirin regiment for heart attacks.
Hey thank u I had aspirin mixed up with nitroglycerine, I appreciate the investigation. I fixed my earlier post
@ashalayo Great! Also, thanks for all the additional info! I need To get more familiar with natural remedies so this was great!!!
